Swallows Burgundy

Line-art swallows and a scalloped frame, the whole suite in one burgundy.

Swallows is drawn rather than assembled. A pair of birds carrying an olive branch heads the invitation, the welcome sign and the seating chart; a scalloped double frame holds the pieces that are objects rather than reading matter — the reply card, the place card, the number on the table. The script is copperplate, the labels are wide-set caps, and nothing else is asked to do any work.

Color is fixed per piece instead of chosen once for the whole suite, and in this palette one color does both jobs. Burgundy is the ground on the pieces a guest holds — the invitation, the save the date, the place card, the belly band — and the ink on the ones they read closely, which are left white. Nothing alternates between two inks: the suite is a single color against paper, and the rhythm is which side of it each piece falls on.

It goes well past the invitation and the reply card. A save the date months ahead, a belly band to wrap the envelope, a favor tag, table numbers, an 18×24 seating chart and a thank-you card for afterwards — the pieces a wedding actually needs, in the same hand, so nothing on the day looks borrowed from somewhere else.

Best for

One color throughout: burgundy as the ground, burgundy as the ink, and white for everything it is printed on.
